The Tahoe Rim Trail (TRT) circles the Lake Tahoe basin in California and Nevada, traveling through the Sierra Nevada and Carson ranges. The TRT is 165 miles long and ranges in elevation from 6,200 feet to over 10,300 feet. The TRT coincides with the Pacific Crest Trail on the western shore of Lake Tahoe. Mountain bikes are allowed on half the TRT and equestrian uses are permitted along the entire trail. Hikers need a permit to pass through the Desolation Wilderness and bear canisters are highly encouraged. The US Forest Service and Nevada State Parks require that hikers use bear proof canisters or bear proof techniques to store their food. There are several areas that are above tree line where hanging a bear bag is not possible. The TRT has been given the National Recreation Trail designation for 96 miles of the trail south and east of Lake Tahoe.
