After thruhiking the Appalachian Trail in 2012, I started doing some research on other long distance hiking trails. Finding information on long and better-known trails, like the Pacific Crest Trail, the Long Trail, and the John Muir Trail, seemed easy enough. However, I often found obscure information on other trails that most hikers have never heard of, like the Long Path in New York and the Superior Hiking Trail in Minnesota. Most of these smaller trails seem to offer much different experiences for hikers, like less foot traffic, more remote or quiet settings, different terrain and views, and of course, different challenges.
While thruhiking the Long Path in 2015, I realized searching for trail information can be made easier! Since then I’ve been collecting information on all the long distance hiking trails I could find… And the idea of GoThruhiking was born.
GoThruhiking is a database of long distance hiking trails in the United States at least 50 miles long. The database contains basic trail information along with all relevant links to resources (guidebooks, maps, planners, etc.) to get your planning started. This site allows you to search for trails in a state or specific region of the United States. Use the ADVANCED SEARCH to narrow the results of trails by their length in miles.
What you will NOT find on GoThruhiking.com: Annoying Ads. If there is one thing I hate about free websites, is the overuse of banner ads that pop-up or start playing videos going beyond user control, and ultimately ruining the user experience. I do not have any immediate plans for including ads on this site, and should I ever consider including them for offsetting costs, it will be on an extremely limited basis.
Currently to offset operating costs, my solution is to provide products for sale that hikers will LOVE.
