The Sheltowee Trace Trail starts in northern Kentucky in Rowan County and travels 323 miles south to the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area in Tennessee. The trail mostly traverses the Daniel Boone National Forest, but also includes other recreation areas and state resort parks. The Sheltowee Trace was named after Daniel Boone (Sheltowee was his Shawnee tribe name meaning Big Turtle). The Sheltowee Trace in some sections is a multi-use trail allowing mountain bikes, equestrians, and even all-terrain vehicles. The trail is designated a National Recreation Trail and is administered by the US Forest Service.
