The Mountains-to-Sea Trail travels from Clingmans Dome in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park to Jockeys Ridge State Park on the outer banks at roughly 1200 miles. While 700 miles of the footpath are complete, hikers can still hike across the state using temporary connectors on back roads and state bike routes. Volunteers across North Carolina are currently planning and building the trail to link state land and water trails. Hikers will get to see mountains and gorges on the west and small farms, swamps, and the barrier islands on the east, not to mention the historic colonial towns the trail passes.
