Vermont hosts the Long Trail, which starts at the Vermont/Massachusetts border and travels 272 miles north to the Canadian border near North Troy, VT. The first 100 miles of the LT coincides with the Appalachian Trail, which splits off from the LT just after crossing US 4 near Rutland, VT. The Long Trail also has roughly 185 miles of side trails worth exploring. During the Mud season in Spring, sections of the trail are sometimes closed to hikers. The Green Mountain Club maintains the trail with the help of hundreds of volunteers.
