The Colorado Trail is 486 mile long path that starts in southern Denver in Waterton Canyon and traverses south west to Durango. Most of the trail is over 10,000 feet with the highest point being over 13,200 feet. Hikers have the option of hiking either the Collegiate East (the traditional trail) or the Collegiate West in conjuction with the Continental Divide Trail. Most hikers travel east to west on the CT, depending on the start date of the hike. The trail is divided into 33 Segments in the trail guide and databook. Many parts of the CT are open for multi-use purposes. Hikers will see mountain bikers, equestrians, and occasional motorized bikes. The Summer and early Fall are the best seasons to hike the CT.
