Description

image

The Centennial Trail is a hiking trail found almost entirely in the Black Hills National Forest of South Dakota. The trail begins in Bear Butte State Park and travels 111 miles south to Windcave National Park. Along the way it passes through or near Fort Meade Recreational Area, Pactola Reservoir, Sheridan Lake, Black Elk Wilderness, Mount Rushmore National Monument, Norbeck Wildlife Preserve, French Creek Natural Area, and Custer State Park. The northern part of the Centennial Trail outside of the Black Hills National Forest (approx. 37 miles) is open for multi-use for hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking. The section between Dalton Lake Trailhead and the Pilot Knob Trailhead (Approx 14 miles) is also open to Off Highway Vehicles (OHV). The wild life around the Centennial Trail is very diverse, so hikers may see deer, bighorn sheep, antelope, elk, mountain goats and possibly buffalo. The George S. Mickelson Trail (109 miles) runs parallel to the Centennial Trail and could make for a good circuit hike.
